CHAPTER 11
The following morning, Lucy and I stopped by the Cup and Bean Coffee Shop after our run. I had relayed everything I had learned about Lainey and her family to Alec the previous night. I would have liked to say he was close to finding the killer. He wasnât. But I had the utmost confidence there would be a break in the case soon.
âIâm going to get an iced caramel latte,â Lucy said, looking up at the menu board. âFall will be here before you know it, and it will be too cold to drink iced coffees.â
I nodded. âThen weâd better enjoy our iced coffee while we can. But Iâm more than ready for a pumpkin spice latte.â
She groaned. âOh, donât say that. Itâs all Iâve been thinking about for weeks now, and you know we canât have one for several more weeks.â
I nodded, and we stepped up to the counter and gave the barista our orders. Then I turned to Lucy. âIâve been experimenting with making my own pumpkin spice lattes. Theyâre okay, but theyâre not the same as getting them at a coffee shop.â
âAt least youâre daring enough to try,â she said. âAll I do is sit around and dream about them. Well, honestly, Iâm dreaming about pumpkin spice anything.â She chuckled.
âMe too. When I get done with these blueberry cheesecakes Iâm making, maybe Iâll make some pumpkin cream cheese muffins.â
She groaned. âNow youâre torturing me. Youâve got to make them. I need one.â
I paid for our iced coffees, and we headed over to Mr. Wintersâ table. âGood morning, Mr. Winters.â
He looked up from his newspaper and pushed his glasses back up on his nose. âGood morning, ladies. Whatâs new?â
We sat down across from him, and Lucy reached underneath the table and patted Sadieâs head. âUnfortunately, not enough. Have you found out anything?â I asked.
He pressed his lips together. âI wish I had something big. I still feel terrible that the Easleyâs daughter was murdered. But I was thinking; if she arrived in town for Christmas, how come no one saw her?â
I shook my head. âThat is an excellent question, but unfortunately, itâs one we donât have an answer to yet. But weâll figure it out.â
Lucy took a sip of her coffee. âYes, weâll figure it out. I think itâs strange that nobody will admit to having seen her, so my guess is the killer saw her and doesnât want to let anyone know they did. Theyâre trying to distance themselves from her completely.â
âI think youâre right,â I said. âWe know she arrived in town for Christmas, so maybe the friend who picked her up from the airport is her killer.â
âSo, who picked her up from the airport?â Mr. Winters asked.
I shook my head. âShe only told her parents a friend was picking her up. She never mentioned a name.â
I glanced up when I saw someone heading in our direction. It was Dave Evans, the Easley Farms manager. I smiled at him. âHey, Dave, how are you?â
He nodded, one hand in the pocket of his windbreaker, the other holding a cup of coffee.
